A. The Rising: On Saturday, March 22, 2014, at 10:37 a.m. local time, a major mudslide occurred 4 miles east of Oso, Washington. The Oso mudslide represented a tragedy that our community witnessed and experienced for days to come. The entrant was part of the front lines of reporting the news and sharing the families stories. On Friday, May 31, 2014 they published The Rising, a memorial section about the Oso tragedy. Beyond the daily news coverage of the tragedy, they felt it was important to publish a section that would pay tribute to individuals who were killed and lives that were shattered by the tragic mudslide. Equally, the section also served to honor the first respondents and the community volunteers who rushed to help—and did not give up even as the overwhelming task dragged on and hopes faded. They believe that the words and pictures in this section will be something those who were touched by this disaster will keep in a special place for years to come.
